Balclutha Golf Club hosted the 2018 South Otago Champs on Sunday the 15th July which featured a strong field of 91 players from Dunedin, Oamaru, Invercargill, Queenstown, Wanaka and locally from South Otago.
The South Otago Champs incorporates the South Otago Junior Open which is an under 19 event on the Greg Turner Junior Order of Merit. This attracted a strong junior contingent to the field.
The under 19 section was won by Hayden Robertson (Taieri Lakes) with a two over 73. Robertson was 4 shots clear of his nearest rivals Callum White (St Clair) Scott Clark (Otago) and the 2017 winner George McDonald (Wanaka) who all posted a score of 77. Noah Novacek (Wakatipu Junior) was almost the story of the day however. Novacek who is 10 years of age posted an impressive 81 around the hilly Balclutha course which featured many tricky hole locations, especially for a junior learning his trade.
In the Open section competititon was rife, with many Otago and Southland senior representatives in the field. The eventual winner was Brandon Hodgson (Otago) with his even par 71. Hodgson’s 71 was equalled by his playing partner Michael Ormandy, however Ormandy could not accept the prize due to his commitments in becoming a PGA Professional. One shot back from Hodgson was the Wanaka pair of Ryan Shuttleworth and Blake Mason with 72. Both players will rue missed opportunities but will know they are inform as Otago Senior Trials are only a month away.
