Manawatu/Wanganui have won the 2018 Freyberg Masters, held at Taupo Golf Club’s Centennial course last week. They held off a challenge from Tasman to take the title in a tight finish on Friday afternoon.

The 2018 masters campaign was always going to be a rebuilding exercise for Otago, but there was hope the team could finish above the bottom rung of the competition ladder.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and Otago lost it’s last round to Taranaki to finish in the bottom slot.

The team was the best available and gave it their all, but the standard of competition was just too strong and Otago’s over 40 years of age golfers need to regroup and work towards a better showing next year.

Our southern neighbours, Southland also battled to get away from the bottom of the table and finished just two slots above Otago, in 13th place.  Perhaps the time is approaching when Otago and Southland should look to follow Northland and North Harbour and form a single district ?
