The 2019 Pennant finals were played at Balclutha and Tapanui Golf Clubs on Sunday 13th October
Both tracks playing somewhat longer after a week of wet weather but the finals were contested in great spirit with some tight results.
This year 18 different clubs were represented in the 7 grades from all corners of Otago.
The Senior A title played at Balclutha GC had Arrowtown GC and Otago GC locked together at end of play after Otago’s Nick Borren and Arrowtown’s Arron Garnett both missed putts to win it outright on the last. After both teams had posted wins against North Otago. Arrowtown won the title on count back making this the first time the Arrowtown Club had won the Senior A Pennant Flag.
Arrowtown’s team was made up of former provincial rep players Cam Beel (Otago) Sam Davis (Bay of Plenty) Aaron Garnett (North Harbour) and Chris Yallop.
This year was the first time both the Men and Women played there finals together. Played also at Balclutha the Women’s matches were close with several games throughout the day going to the last but in the end the Alexandra women led by Suzanne Grant with two wins, beat both Clinton/Allan Grange and Otago GC by the same margins 2 ½ game to 1 ½ to take home the Women’s Pennant Flag for 2019. Mary Thompson (Otago) had two wins, Liz Chittock (Clinton/Allan), Karen Crawford (Alex) and Sandy MacDonald (Otago) also unbeaten with a win and a half each.
Playing at Tapanui the morning Senior B semi-finals were tight with Arrowtown having 3 games go to the last but managed to see off North Otago 3 ½ to ½. Taieri were also made to work in their semi-final against Balclutha with 3 games also going to the last but ending 2 all. Thanks to Ian Boath 3/2 win at the top Taieri Lakes got through on count back. Not much separated Taieri Lakes and Arrowtown in the afternoon final but in the end with wins from Ian Boath 1 up, Dean Outram 2/1 and Matt Mercer 4/3 Taieri Lakes won the Senior B flag for 2019.
This year’s Presidents Grade was played at Balclutha. The first semi-final between Taieri Lakes and Tapanui went Tapanui’s way 4-2 but could have gone either way with the match of the morning between Brian Ferguson (Taieri) and Levi McCall (Tapanui) ending all square. Tarras held off Ardleigh in the other semi-final 3 ½ to 2 ½. In the final Tapanui led out strongly from the top with wins from Scott Stiven, Levi McCall and their middle order of John Edgar and Bruce Weller winning also helped the Tapanui team win the Flag in the end 4 ½ games to 1 ½.
Lawrence GC and Queenstown GC played the Intermediate final at Tapanui. Lawrence had 3 games go to the last against Island Park in their morning semi-final winning 2 ½ to 1 ½ and Queenstown came out on top beating Omarama 4-0 in their semi-final. In the final Lawrence had good wins from Colin Lockhart at the top and Hamish Brown at number 4 and with Queenstown middle order of Rob Taylor and John Ennis winning the Pennant Flag was decided on count back with Lawrence winning 8 holes to 4.
The Junior A played their finals at Tapanui. In the morning matches Lawrence were winners over Chisholm Links 2 ½ to 1 ½ and Waikouaiti CG beat Alexandra GC 3-1. The Lawrence team had to work hard in afternoon final against Waikouaiti with the top two games going to the last, in the end with wins from Geoff Scott, Brent Taylor and a half from Mark Cameron they join their Intermediate team as Pennant Flag winners for 2019.
Tapanui’s Junior B team were trying join their Presidents men as winners when they came up against Tokarahi GC in the final at Balclutha. It was one-way traffic in the morning matches with Tapanui beating Gladfield GC 3-1 and Tokarahi cleaning up Alexandra 4-0. The final was very close with 3 matches going to the last hole, with Tokarahi’s Bruce Keown, Brad Stalker and Andrew Ballantyne getting the job done to give them the Pennant Flag for 2019.
